Sudama Pandey (Dhoomil) Biography

Sudama Pandey ‘Dhumil’ has been a famous poet of contemporary poetry in Hindi literature. Through his poems, he used to be sharp against society and political evils. The failure of the common man along with the failed democracy and the criminal character of the upper middle classes have been instrumental in portraying through the poem. His standard of living was so simple that after hearing the news of his death on the radio, the people of his house found out that he was such a great poet.

Early Life and Family Sudama Pandey (Dhoomil) Family

Sudama Pandey ‘Dhumil’ was born on 9 November 1936 in village Khevli, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. His father Shivnayak Pandey was an accountant. His father died when he was eleven years old. Due to which his childhood was spent in a lot of struggles. His early education was completed in village Khevali. When he passed the high school examination in 1953, he was the first person in his village to pass matriculation. Due to poor financial condition, he left his studies from Inter College, Varanasi in between. But after some time, he resumed his education and received a diploma of Vigut from Varanasi in 1958. And their intellectual development came from libraries. Meanwhile, at the young age of 12, he was married to Murat Devi.

Scope of work

After his marriage, Sudama Pandey came to Calcutta in search of employment. In the beginning, he worked as a laborer. But soon after getting information about this, his classmate friend Taraknath Pandey got him a job in a wooden company (M / s Talwar Brothers Pvt Ltd). After working for a year and a half, he returned home due to illness. After this, in 1958, he received a diploma in electricity by taking first place from the first class and was appointed to the post of electrical instructor there. Then after getting this job and promotion, he was employed in Ballia, Benaras and Saharanpur. In 1974, he was transferred to Sitapur. But here he remained unwell.

Sudama Pandey was the ‘stunning sun’ of ‘Dhumil’ Hindi literature. He gave the message through his poetry on topics like evils, evils, exploitation of people, suppression of rights of people. He has been a poet of political consciousness and awareness. He remained in opposition to the capitalist and feudal system, which denied the rights of people even after independence. On this, he tightened the sharp accents in his poems. He made his own identity not only at the subject level, but also at the level of language-style. His language brings poetic truth closer to life truth. In their language, there is simplicity of rural life with aggression, sharpness and sarcasm. In 1972, his only poetry collection ‘From Parliament to the Road’ was published when Sudama Pandey was alive.

Death | Sudama Pandey (Dhoomil) Death

Sudama Pandey suffered a headache while working in Sitapur in 1974 due to which he was admitted to the Medical College. Where he was told brain tumor. Then in November 1974, he underwent a brain operation at King George’s Medical College, Lucknow. After which he went into a coma. After this, he died on 10 February 1975.
